We've all heard of Writer's block.
It's what we say when we feel like we can't write. When we're stuck on a section of our story and need time to think.
But what causes this?
There can be many reasons.
You can argue that it's a natural occurrence. That our brains are tired. That we lack motivation. Need time to think. Need to go for a walk or read someone else's work to inspire us. But what if you're blocked for longer then an afternoon? A day? Week? Month?
Yes, Writer's Block can just be a blip in your work. That you need time to mull over an idea. But, if it goes on it should be taken seriously. It could be caused by your own current state of mental health.
For example, I am currently living in a new country and have been job searching for a month now. I am living off of savings which I would rather not touch. This is of course causing me high levels of stress. And yes, I am struggling with Writer's Block. But I know it is caused by my own mental health. When I have a job and am no longer living off my savings, and can settle into a normal daily routine, I know I will be able to write again.
But stress is not the only thing that can cause your mental health to deteriorate. It could be something far harder to solve. You could have been recently diagnosed with Anxiety, Depression, and a multitude of other things. This could take longer than a month or even a year to overcome. It is still known as Writer's Block, but it is far more serious and you must focus upon yourself.
Baring this in mind, are you using the term Writer's Block too freely and easily? Should it be reserved for extreme cases or is it ok to generalise everything as a block?
Something to have a think about ;)
